BIM for Product Manufacturing
The key to any successful building project is clear, concise design information between all the parties involved. A lack of coordination can result in design errors, construction delays, and astronomical costs. Today, building information modeling (BIM) is used to ensure clear and concise information across the scope of a project, from the design phase through to post-construction.
BIM is a design process which is based on the collection of information at a single point. It allows a manufacturer’s architectural and engineering customers to explore a project’s key physical and functional characteristics digitally – before it is built. This results in complete information for code compliance analysis, fewer translation errors and losses between stakeholders, and reduced project time and cost, among several other benefits.
Building product manufacturers are frequently required to provide BIM compliant models (models with all the BIM required characteristics) which can be directly incorporated into the building design process. Manufacturers who can provide BIM compliant models provide greater value to their customers and win more business.
EMA's BIM Services
EMA is uniquely qualified to create BIM compliant models from manufacturing 3D models. We combine our digital prototyping experience with our BIM expertise to provide an easy translation from your existing models, regardless of file type.
Making BIM compliant models takes more than editing geometries and adding certain characteristics.
With knowledgeable and experienced BIM professionals on staff, and a dedicated project management team that can handle all of your project’s details (including the approval and registration process), companies all over the United States are finding that EMA is a trusted partner when looking to provide BIM compliant models.

According to an
independent study, Autodesk® Inventor® is dramatically better compared with Dassault Systemes SolidWorks at allowing manufacturers to easily create BIM-ready content for use in architectural and construction designs. This can be attributed to two of Autodesk Inventor software’s exclusive capabilities:
- AEC Exchange: A capability unique to Autodesk Inventor, AEC Exchange assigns all the required BIM attributes to a model, such as component type and connections, while creating a simplified model that can be opened inside Autodesk Revit or AutoCAD. New in 2011, materials that are assigned in Inventor also carry over to Revit using the Autodesk Material Library, further helping to save time and reduce translation errors between different groups
- Shrinkwrap: Autodesk Inventor quickly and easily removes non-essential data from the engineering model prior to exporting to Revit. This protects intellectual property and reduces the file size of the component to go into the building designs
Although Autodesk Inventor can be a major advantage when making a BIM compliant model, there is much more to BIM than adding required characteristics and having those files read into Revit. Make sure to contact EMA for help in making your models BIM compliant.
EMA provides a complete line of Autodesk manufacturing and visualization products, training, services, and BIM for manufacturers throughout several regions of the United States. We offer free, unlimited telephone and Internet technical support to all customers with an active Autodesk Subscription agreement through EMA, and we are uniquely capable of assisting with both your MCAD and EDA requirements.
